Direct flights between Kolkata and Kunming are expected to resume soon, signalling a renewed push to restore connectivity between India and China.
The development was highlighted by Chinese Consul General in Kolkata, Xu Wei, during the 2026 Chinese New Year Reception, where he stressed the importance of stronger people-to-people ties, tourism, and cultural exchange.
Calling for more direct air links between the two countries, Xu Wei expressed optimism about the return of the Kolkata–Kunming route, which was earlier operated by China Eastern Airlines. He welcomed the Indian government’s move to relax visa restrictions and said he hoped to see more Chinese tourists travelling to India, particularly to West Bengal, to experience its rich culture and heritage.
Kolkata holds a unique place in India–China relations as the city hosts India’s only Chinatown, reflecting a long-standing cultural bond between the people of the two regions. The Chinese New Year reception itself showcased this shared connection, with Indian youth performing Chinese songs and local artistes presenting Chinese martial arts, underlining the depth of cultural exchange between the two communities.
Looking ahead, the Chinese Consulate in Kolkata plans to expand its cultural engagement in the city beyond participation in the Kolkata Book Fair. Xu Wei indicated that future initiatives could include larger showcases of Chinese publications, cultural workshops, seminars, food festivals, and film festivals, aimed at deepening mutual understanding and collaboration.
With discussions around direct flights gaining momentum, the possible resumption of the Kolkata–Kunming air route is being seen as a positive step towards boosting tourism, trade, and cultural ties, further strengthening Kolkata’s role as a key gateway for international connectivity in eastern India.
