Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has secured a significant order from the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) for the modernisation and expansion of the IISCO Steel Plant (ISP) at Burnpur in Asansol, West Bengal. The engineering and construction major has been awarded the complete Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Commissioning (EPCC) contract for the project’s core process units.
The large-scale expansion project, estimated to cost ₹45,810.92 crore, marks a major step in strengthening India’s steel manufacturing capabilities while delivering substantial economic and employment benefits to West Bengal, particularly the Asansol–Durgapur industrial belt.
As part of the project, SAIL is setting up a new steel plant with an annual capacity of 4.6 million tonnes at the IISCO Steel Plant. The modernisation and capacity expansion aim to improve operational efficiency, enhance production capability, and align the plant with contemporary steelmaking technologies.
L&T’s EPCC mandate covers the design, engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning of the core process units, underscoring the company’s expertise in executing complex industrial and metallurgical projects at scale.
The expansion project is expected to create large-scale employment opportunities across different phases:
During the construction phase:
During the operational phase:
These employment opportunities will provide a major boost to the local economy, supporting livelihoods and driving ancillary industrial activity in and around Asansol.
The IISCO Steel Plant expansion is a crucial part of SAIL’s broader strategy to enhance steel production capacity across India. For West Bengal, the project reinforces the state’s position as a key industrial hub in eastern India, attracting investment, strengthening infrastructure, and supporting long-term economic growth.
With L&T executing the core process units and SAIL driving capacity expansion, the project represents a strong collaboration between two public and private sector giants, aligned with India’s manufacturing and infrastructure development goals.
The expansion of the IISCO Steel Plant is more than a capacity upgrade; it is a catalyst for industrial revival, job creation, and economic momentum in West Bengal. As construction progresses, the project is expected to play a transformative role in shaping the region’s industrial landscape in the years ahead.
