West Bengal Eyes Historic Milestone with Potential Third IIT; IIEST Shibpur Upgrade and North Bengal IIT in Focus
West Bengal could be on the verge of a significant milestone in India’s higher education landscape, with the state exploring the possibility of having three IITs.
The West Bengal Government is preparing to approach the Union Government seeking IIT status for IIEST Shibpur, which could make it the state’s second IIT after IIT Kharagpur. At the same time, the state is also working towards establishing a new IIT in North Bengal, with suitable land being identified in and around Siliguri.
If both proposals are approved and implemented, West Bengal could become the first Indian state to have three IITs.
West Bengal Seeks IIT Status for IIEST Shibpur
The state government is expected to formally approach the Union Government regarding the proposed upgrade of Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), Shibpur to IIT status.
The proposal is based partly on the argument that IIEST Shibpur already has a substantial campus, infrastructure and academic ecosystem comparable to several newer IITs.
The Union Government will consider the proposal once it is formally submitted.
An IIT designation for IIEST Shibpur could further strengthen its position as a premier engineering, technology and research institution while expanding Bengal’s presence in India’s IIT network.
IIEST Shibpur’s Institutional Legacy
IIEST Shibpur has a long history in engineering education.
The institution was upgraded from Bengal Engineering and Science University (BESU) in 2010 following the recommendations of the Anandakrishnan Committee.
In March 2014, it received the status of an Institute of National Importance, placing it among India’s prominent centrally recognised technical institutions.
The proposed IIT status would represent another major transformation in the institution’s journey and could potentially enhance its academic, research and innovation capabilities.
New IIT Planned for North Bengal
The proposed IIEST upgrade is being discussed alongside another major higher-education initiative — the establishment of a new IIT in North Bengal.
The state is identifying suitable land in and around Siliguri for the proposed institution.
A new IIT in the region could significantly expand access to premier engineering and technology education in North Bengal while creating opportunities for research, innovation, entrepreneurship and industry-academia collaboration.
It could also strengthen Siliguri’s position as an emerging education and economic hub in eastern India.
Bengal Could Have Three IITs
At present, West Bengal is home to IIT Kharagpur, one of India’s oldest and most prominent IITs.
If IIEST Shibpur receives IIT status and a new IIT is established in North Bengal, the state’s IIT ecosystem could comprise:
- IIT Kharagpur
- IIT Shibpur, subject to the proposed upgrade
- A new IIT in North Bengal, subject to approval and establishment
This would potentially make West Bengal the first state in India with three IITs.
Potential Impact on Bengal’s Education Ecosystem
The expansion of the IIT ecosystem could have a wider impact beyond engineering education.
Three IIT-level institutions could contribute to:
- Advanced research and development
- Technology and innovation
- Industry-academia collaboration
- Startup and entrepreneurship ecosystems
- Skilled workforce development
- New employment opportunities
- Greater investment in research infrastructure
- Stronger technology capabilities across South and North Bengal
For North Bengal in particular, a new IIT could provide a major boost to the region’s higher-education infrastructure and create new opportunities for students and researchers.
A Potential Milestone for West Bengal
The proposed IIEST Shibpur upgrade and North Bengal IIT plan represent two potentially significant developments for Bengal’s education and innovation ecosystem.
While both proposals still require formal processes and approvals, their successful implementation could substantially expand the state’s presence in India’s premier technical education network.
If both initiatives materialise, West Bengal could make history by becoming India’s first state with three IITs.
