New Town is all set to take a major step towards sustainable urban transport. The New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) has announced plans to roll out an app-based Public Bicycle Sharing (PBS) System, aimed at making cycling a convenient, affordable, and eco-friendly mode of everyday travel.

The initiative is part of NKDA’s broader vision to promote green mobility and reduce carbon emissions across the city. By encouraging people to switch to bicycles for short-distance commutes, the system will help ease traffic congestion, cut down pollution, and enhance the quality of life in one of Kolkata’s most planned and progressive townships.

In the first phase, NKDA plans to introduce around 350 bicycles, including both regular and electric-assist (e-bike) models. To support this, nearly 500 docking stations will be set up in two phases, strategically placed across residential areas, metro corridors, business hubs, and public parks.

Each bicycle will feature GPS tracking, QR-code unlocking, and integrated lighting, ensuring convenience, accessibility, and safety for users, even during night rides.

What makes the project stand out is its self-sustaining model. The entire system will operate on a revenue-sharing basis, without any government subsidy or viability-gap funding. This approach highlights a shift toward financially sustainable urban infrastructure, aligning with the smart city vision of New Town.

With this initiative, NKDA aims to make cycling an integral part of New Town’s daily commute, promoting health, sustainability, and a greener future for all.

Affordable. Smart. Sustainable.

New Town is truly pedalling its way toward a cleaner and more connected future.
