West Bengal is set to strengthen its position in India’s maritime and manufacturing landscape with a major investment by Titagarh Naval Systems Ltd. The company has announced plans to invest ₹550 crore in setting up a new shipbuilding facility in the state, marking a significant step towards expanding India’s shipbuilding capabilities.
A wholly owned subsidiary of Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd, the company is undertaking this expansion to enhance its capacity to build larger vessels, including Medium Range (MR) tankers. The upcoming facility will be spread across approximately 50 acres of land provided by the Government of West Bengal.
The project has gained momentum due to strong policy support from the Government of India. Under the Shipbuilding Development Scheme, the company is eligible for a 25% capital subsidy for brownfield expansion. This incentive has played a crucial role in scaling up the project from its initial plan.
Originally, the expansion focused on building infrastructure such as slipways, block fabrication units, and fabrication sheds, with an estimated investment of around ₹330 crore. However, with the introduction of the capital subsidy, the project scope has been significantly enhanced.
The revised plan now includes the development of a 200-metre-long dry dock, a critical addition that will enable the construction of larger vessels like Medium Range tankers. This upgrade not only increases the project cost to ₹550 crore but also elevates the facility’s strategic importance in India’s shipbuilding ecosystem.
The investment reflects growing confidence in West Bengal as a hub for industrial growth and advanced manufacturing. With access to land, policy support, and a skilled workforce, the state continues to attract significant investments across sectors.
The new facility is expected to:
India has been actively working to reduce dependence on imports and build a robust domestic shipbuilding industry. Projects like this align with the broader vision of strengthening the country’s maritime infrastructure and positioning India as a global shipbuilding hub.
With this expansion, Titagarh Naval Systems is not only scaling its operations but also contributing to a larger national objective, building a self-reliant and globally competitive shipbuilding industry.
As Kolkata and West Bengal continue to witness strategic investments, this development adds another milestone to the region’s growing industrial narrative.
