Kolkata and West Bengal are set to witness a transformative phase in infrastructure development as Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for projects worth approximately ₹18,700 crore across the state.

The large-scale initiative focuses on strengthening road, railway, and port infrastructure, positioning Eastern India as a key driver of the country’s economic growth.

Strengthening Connectivity Across the State

A major portion of the investment is directed towards improving connectivity. Key road projects such as the Kharagpur–Moregram Expressway and the Dubrajpur Bypass, along with the construction of bridges over the Kangsabati and Shilabati rivers, are expected to significantly enhance travel efficiency and reduce transit time across districts.

These developments aim to facilitate smoother movement of goods and passengers, ultimately accelerating regional economic activity.

Railway Modernization Gains Momentum

Indian Railways received a significant boost with the introduction of the Automatic Block Signalling System on the Kalaikunda–Kanimahuli section, which will improve train safety, increase line capacity, and enable faster operations.

In addition, six railway stations: Kamakhyaguri, Anara, Tamluk, Haldia, Barabhum, and Siuri, have been redeveloped under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, offering upgraded passenger amenities and modern infrastructure.

A new express train service between Purulia and Anand Vihar Terminal has also been flagged off, enhancing connectivity between West Bengal and key northern states including Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi.

Boost to Port Infrastructure and Logistics

Port-led development is another key focus area. Infrastructure at Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port and Haldia Dock Complex is being strengthened to improve cargo handling efficiency and trade capacity.

Projects such as the mechanization of cargo operations at Haldia Dock Complex, renovation of the Bascule Bridge in the Kolkata Dock System, and capacity expansion at Kidderpore Dock are expected to significantly enhance the region’s logistics ecosystem.

Driving Economic Growth in Eastern India

These infrastructure projects are expected to have a far-reaching impact on the economy by boosting trade, attracting investments, and creating employment opportunities. Improved connectivity and logistics will also support industries, tourism, and overall ease of living for citizens.

As these developments take shape, Kolkata continues to reinforce its position as a strategic infrastructure and logistics hub in Eastern India, contributing to India’s broader growth story.
